Learning Listening Skills With Creative Movement and Dinosaurs
A few years back, I discovered Barefoot Books from music therapist Morgan Sparks. She shared 5 Great Singable Stories to Engage Your Child and that lead me to learning more about their wonderful products. We have several of their books and games. I particularly love their teamwork board games for young children. Games are a great way to work on listening skills while playing. So, why do we share all of this? Because it is the basis for this fantastic dinosaur themed giveaway we have pulled together! Which includes the following:
- Large Stretchy Band
- Ditty Bird Dinosaur Sounds Book
- Two Songs from Listen and Learn Music
- Dinosaur Escape Game
- Dinosaur Rap Singable Story
- Dancing Dinos Dominoes
Keep reading to learn more about these great products and for some dinosaur themed listening skills inspiration.
Books and Music
Have you heard of Ditty Bird before? Their books are beautiful and I love their quote "Welcome to the wonderful world of books and music." Two of my loves combined together!
Ditty Bird wants to lead your child through a time when Dinosaurs roamed the land. Even the littlest minds will be thrilled by the realistic sounds of Dinos as they learn the names and facts about each. With a ‘sound dot’ on each page, let’s tiny hands trigger on and off the sounds so they will feel as powerful as the mighty T-Rex. Our movement scarves would be a fun prop to play with. Let them act out the dinos movement with the scarves.
6 Dinosaur sounds include:
- Triceratops
- Stegosaurus
- Tyrannosaurus Rex
- Brontosaurus
- Velociraptor
- The Dinosaurs Song

Of course, our Bear Paw Creek family, all know Rachel from Listen Learn Music! Back in 2012 she wrote a stretchy band song for us. She also has a great playlist for our movement props.
With these two creative movement songs, children will learn how to "Dance Like Dinosaurs" and about "Dinosaur Hatching"! On top of that, both songs teach important skills like:
- Impulse control
- Listening skills
- Creative expression
- Gross motor skills
- Creative thinking skills
- Ability to follow clearly stated directions
Both songs are versatile and fun, leaving room for creative use with movement props, finger puppets, or just moving and grooving around.
Music for Kiddos and Laurie Berkner
In this great blog post entitled 10 Movement Songs for Kids, Stephanie shares some great tips. I wanted to share her tip for using Laurie Berkner's "We Are The Dinosaurs" song.
Stephanie says, "One of the best children’s songs ever written… hands down. BUT, it the way that it ends tends to send kids over the edge (a huge ROAR at the end). If I’m playing guitar, I modify the end and my silly dinosaurs do giant, hilarious, silly YAWNS and then fall asleep. That changes the WHOLE trajectory of a group if I can end this song and kids have calm bodies."
BONUS, BONUS: Laurie Berkner has added her "We are the Dinosaurs" book to the giveaway!!! Check out the video below.
